£90m Liverpool target Thomas Lemar was dropped for Monaco's defeat by Lyon on Wednesday night

Thomas Lemar was absent from Monaco's squad for their 3-2 defeat by Lyon on Wednesday night.

The 22-year-old midfielder was not even named on the bench as the visitors edged out a five-goal thriller. Stevan Jovetic opened the scoring after 13 minutes but Bertrand Traore levelled midway through the first half. An own goal from Djibril Sidibe put Lyon in front four minutes later and Mariano Diaz added a third in the second half. Rony Lopes pulled a goal back with 20 minutes remaining but it was too little, too late. Liverpool set to miss out on Inter Milan starlet Zinho Vanheusden Lemar's absence has fuelled speculation that he is set to join Premier League club Liverpool. He has also attracted interest from Arsenal and Barcelona. Reports on Wednesday suggested the Anfield club had agreed personal terms with the Frenchman. But Monaco boss Jardim also rested four of Monaco's other regular starters, reports the Liverpool Centre-back Jemerson (who has missed a few games in recent weeks), goalkeeper Danijel Subasic and talented Brazilian full back Jorge were all with Lemar in not being selected for the matchday squad. Joao Moutinho, the Portuguese midfielder, was an unused substitute. Indeed, the trio of Jemerson, Subasic and Moutinho make up three of the top five in terms of minutes played for Monaco this season, demonstrating how Jardim did not select his full-strength side.
